Description
With their long, bright red and scale-covered legs, Pale Chanting Goshawks are experts at snatching reptiles from the sticky refuge of the stunted Karoo shrubs. On the ground (where these birds spend a lot of their time) Pale Chanting Goshawks resemble miniature Secretary Birds. I have often seen them, especially young birds, running from bush to bush with tightly folded wings and then dodging (John Cleese-style) after some mouse or lizard. In the final dash of a running strike they raise their wings above their backs just like Secretary Birds. Sometimes they just spend ages peering into bushes. They can keep me in stitches when they behave like this.
